Pike Tuition - Sun 21 Feb 16 - SOAKE Pond

 Thursday 21 January 2016 - 14:59:16 | Dave

Andy Murphy and I would like to offer the opportunity for some pike tuition on Sun 21 Feb 16.

Ade Batten has kindly agreed the use of SOAKE as not only is this a beautiful and intimate water but it also provides a good head of pike that respond well to most tactics. SOAKE also offers enough features to demonstrate some good water craft techniques.

Those of you that have fished for pike in the past will know that whilst they are the apex predator they are also very delicate and prone to going belly up if not handled correctly. Therefore, the aim of the tuition is to explain and demonstrate the number of rigs and baits that can be used, various ways of detecting bite indication, how and when to set hooks correctly and once landed how to unhook them - always remembering they are a sharp-toothed quarry! All with a view of returning the pike safely back in to the water for another lucky angler to catch.

The rough order of events will be:

Arrive for 0800 - meet and greet and have a brew
Whilst sipping away - Andy and I will go through various rod set ups and a general overview of pike fishing
o/c - set up in chosen swims and start pike fishing
Complete at 1200 - those that want to can continue on until 1430 (when the SOAKE booking ends).

If you do not have any dedicated pike equipment then do not fret - your standard carp gear will be more than adequate for this session (rods / reels (min of 15lb line) / bite alarms / net / unhooking mat etc). All you will need in addition is some semi-barbed trebles to wire trace, dead baits and pike floats should you wish to try that method. Please, please read the club rules on the specifics of authorised pike gear (bait, line, trebles etc). That said, if you don't want to spend out, then Andy and I will be bringing more than enough dedicated pike gear (including the specialist unhooking equipment) so all you’ll need is your standard carp set up and we’ll provide the rest.

The success of previous years is not just down to Andy or me, but the helpers that walk the banks, catch the live bait and share their own pike advice. So not only are we asking for names that would like to attend the tuition session but also for willing volunteers to assist us.

If you are interested in taking up pike fishing but unsure of where to start, or would like to brush up on previous pike experience then please reply to the thread on the member forum and Andy and I would love to help out.

Hopefully see you there......

Steve Codling and Andy Murphy

Sinah - Fly Tipping

 Wednesday 20 January 2016 - 17:20:16 | Dave

Please be aware that somebody has fly tipped some rubbish inside the club gate to the South Bank car park.

We will arrange for this to be removed in the near future. Many thanks to the members who reported this problem.

Although we do not suspect any current members this does highlight the importance of keeping gates shut and locked on all our waters. We have had several problems with gates being left unlocked recently. This puts our waters at risk so please report any such problems to the relevant Pond Warden ASAP.

Many Thanks
